Affordable Homes??? Do they exsist??
I am a teacher here in the Bozeman area and my husband works at MSU. We moved here from Billings area for our jobs March 09..
We are seriously beginning to regret our decsion. We have two young children and we thought moving here would provide a great life for them. I lived here briefly after college and loved it. Now that we are searching for a decent size home to buy we are becoming increasingly fustrated at the ridiculous house prices....Just yesterday I looked at a house 3 bedrooms, 1900 sq ft and .48 acres for 500,000!!! WHAT! that is insane..the inside of the home wasn't even "luxury" Seriously what is going on here??? Who are all the people in this town who can afford these outrages prices....??
I just wondering if anyone else is as fustrated and concerned as I am.
This town as great advantages but are they worth it?
I just want to be able to afford a decent mid sized home with somewhat of a yard...nothing fancy....
Curious on your thoughts on this subject..
How can we stop the insanity and really provide a "sustainable" commnunity!
Where are you even looking? If you can't afford a 500k house why are you looking at one? Listen, I get a little tired of hearing this complaint. There are houses now in Bozeman under 200k which is very low for this area. I just did a search on the MLS for 3+ bedroom houses under 250k and there are were 41. Looked through them and a lot of them were on very large lots. These don't even include the for sale by owner properties.
Is this town a little more expensive for housing? Yes it is. It's also part of what makes it such a great place to live in my opinion. You moved from Billings which is a crap hole in my opinion. Get's worse and worse all the time. If you want to go back to the drugs and violence to save money on housing have at it. What you save for in money you lose in other areas of your life.

Well thanks for your opinions!!
As for your question about the 500k house I was driving around picking up brochures...I didn't even realize it was going to be that expensive! I know now not to do that!
As for the 41 homes...if you want a 1300 sq ft home with no green space then yes there are a lot of homes..otherwise there are not.
You really didn't have to be so aggresive, a simple response would have sufficed!

Your wrong ... "if you want a 1300 sq ft home with no green space then yes there are a lot of homes" Some were up to 2400 square feet. Some have bigger lots. Have you used the MLS tool to look for houses?

here is a quick example I found for you...
It's 2400 sq feet... 3 bed 3 bath.. smaller yard but across the street from 100 acre park... ONLY 235k
Looks pretty nice to me...

Yes I have used the MLS tool. I have a realtor as well. The main problem is most of the houses listed are already under contract. The MLS tool is always up to date, unfortunaltely.
I am not wrong. Most of the homes under 250,00 fall around 1300-1640 sq ft. Occasionally there is one that is 2000sq ft or over.
We have been looking all over NW Bozeman since that is the most affordable.
We will find something, people always do. I just think this town has too high of prices given the wages and the industry.
am fustrated is all.
P.S. Billings is not a crap hole...it has some really great things to offer and a wonderful sense of community...you have to seek it out it is not as obvious as it is in a town like Bozeman, that's all :)..
I lived there and in Missoula and in Red Lodge and all were great experiences and unique....
Anyway thx for your thoughts!

Under contract! I also found that one.. rare find! Thx for looking :)..

I lived in Billings too...Don't drive into the wrong part of town to seek out your sense of community. I like that Bozeman doesn't have any wrong parts of town. Anyway good luck on your search. Properties are out there. You might have even better luck looking in Belgrade. Big lots and big houses for less money. You will have to make sacrifices if you are looking for a house in Bozeman on a budget that you may not have to make there....well, other than the sacrifice of not being in Bozeman :)
